Parks and Open Spaces
A large percentage of West Devon consists of Dartmoor National Park, but we also have several parks and opens spaces. These are not all administered by the Council. The different types of areas are outlined below, along with information about which organisation is responsible for them:
Countryside Sites
Old Town Park Nature Reserve Okehampton and Tavistock Viaduct Walk LNR, Tavistock are both maintained by West Devon Borough Council. These sites are managed for nature conservation and to offer recreational and educational opportunities.
Graveyards
West Devon Borough Council maintains 8 closed graveyards in the Borough. The other cemetaries in the area are the responsibility of the relevant Parish or Town Councils.
Grounds Maintenance
We maintain a number of grass areas, as well as shrub and flower beds owned by or under the resposibility of the Council. Landscapes South West provide a service to maintain certain other areas in West Devon. These include areas such as community play parks, some hedges and some verges.
Play Facilities
The Council is responsible for some of the play facilities in West Devon, and we use external contractors for their upkeep and maintenance. Many more facilities are owned and maintained by relevant Town and Parish Councils.
