Homelessness

A service available to anyone who is homeless or threatened with homelessness

My landlord has given me notice to leave. What can I do?

Contact the Housing Advice Team as soon as possible on 01822 813600. We will check whether the notice is valid and will talk to your landlord about the reasons for serving the notice to see if we can resolve your problems. If we cannot resolve them, we will try to help you to find alternative accommodation.

I am thinking of leaving home as I keep having arguments with my parents. Can you help?

There is a shortage of affordable housing and it is very important that any move is well planned. It may be helpful to talk to someone first to help you sort out your problems at home. Talk to a Housing Advisor and we can put you in touch with agencies that can offer to mediate between you and your family to help resolve problems.

I am homeless, and have been staying with friends. Can you help?

Contact a Housing Advisor as soon as possible. We will investigate your situation and we may have a duty to find you accommodation. We have to find out if you are eligible, homeless, in priority need and not homeless as a result of your own actions. See our leaflet on 'Homelessness' for further information.

I have been accepted as homeless by the Council and am going into temporary accommodation. What about all my belongings? Where do I store them?

If we have accepted a duty towards you as a homeless person, we will arrange safe storage for your possessions until permanent accommodation is available. There may be a small charge for this.

I have to be out of my flat within a month. I am looking at other private rented flats but they all want a deposit and I don't have enough money. Can you help?

The Council operates a Bond Guarantee Scheme which can help local people who are homeless or threatened with homelessness and who are unable to afford a deposit access a home in the private rented sector. For more details please contact us. The link entitled “Bond Guarantee Scheme” under USEFUL INFORMATION also provides further details.
