Why aren't you recycling spectacles and mobile phones anymore?

Why do I need to sort my recycling?

Our new larger vehicles have greater capacity allowing us to collect more recycling. In order to do this you will need to sort your recycling into separate boxes. From the 16 April you will also be able to recycle all types of card again.

The new vehicles have separate compartments for each type of recycling. The items in BOX1 will be emptied into the same compartment, while the items in BOX2 will be separated by the crews into different compartments. Please don't put items into bags though, as this will slow the crews down.

We need you to do this so that we have as few collection vehicles out as possible. This will keep our roads clear, our environment healthy and our costs down.

What's so special about these new vehicles?

The new vehicles are fuel efficient, with impeccable green credentials. They have the ability to collect more recycling - more time can be spent collecting and less time travelling to and from the recycling centres, which saves on even more fuel.

What goes into each box?

BOX 1 - plastic bottles, food tins and drinks cans

BOX 2 - paper, card, books and catalogues, glass bottles and jars, clothing and batteries

West Devon Waste Box 2

Can I recycle card?

Card can continue to be recycled. Please place card inside BOX 2. Larger sized card can be left at the side of BOX 2. If you have large quantities of cardboard, or anything over 75cm long which is the size of the opening on the vehicle this needs to be taken to your local recycling centre.

I only have one box, what should I do?

If you need a second box you can order one using this form but please only ask for extra boxes if you really need them as these are expensive and we do monitor the amount of containers put out by each household.

If you only want one box, you can use this to present your recycling on alternate weeks; one week for plastic bottles, empty aerosols, tins and cans, and the next for paper, card, glass, clothing and batteries. Don't worry about putting stickers on the box as the crews will take the recycling providing it is grouped into the correct box.

I don't have much recycling and I'd prefer to put out one box

If you only use one box, you can use this to present your recycling on alternate weeks; one week for plastic bottles and cans, and the next for paper, card, glass, clothing and batteries.

Don't worry about putting stickers on the box as the crews will take the recycling providing it is sorted.

Your literature refers to a blue box - I only have a green one?

It would have been too costly to issue every household in West Devon with a new blue box. When existing green boxes wear out we will replace one of them with a blue box.

Any combination of boxes is fine - two green or one green and one blue. What matters is that the right items are in the right box.

I have two or more green boxes but not a blue one - can I order a blue one?

You don't need separate colour boxes or different types of stickers. The recycling will be taken provided it is clearly grouped into a box with the correct material types depending on whether this is to be a BOX1 or BOX2.

If you need more stickers, please use this form to request them.

I use more than two boxes, can I continue to do this?

Yes, we want you to recycle as much as possible. Don't worry about not having enough stickers as the crews will take the recycling as long plastic bottles and cans are in a separate box to paper, card, glass, textiles and batteries.

If you need more stickers, please use this form to request them.

I have more than two recycling boxes, how can I get more stickers?

You can order more stickers using this form.

What do I do if I lose my stickers or they peel off?

You can order more stickers using this form.

How have you told people about these changes?

We have sent a service guide, letter and stickers with this year's Council Tax bill which explains how we will collect recycling in future.

I haven't received a letter or any stickers, what should I do?

If you haven't received your stickers, please use this form to request them.

I'm waiting for a new box as mine is damaged/lost/stolen - what should I do in the meantime?

If you're waiting for a new box to arrive, we suggest you alternate and present BOX 1 contents one week and BOX 2 contents the next.

My recycling has been left because I didn't sort the contents. Will you come back and collect it?

We cannot collect any recycling that is put into the wrong box. If you do not separate your recycling into the correct boxes your recycling will not be collected.

If this happens we will leave you a sticker so that you know we haven't just missed your recycling. The sticker will have instructions of what goes in each box, and you will need to sort it and represent it for collection the following week.

If you sort your recycling into the correct boxes we will collect it on your next collection date.

The crews will still be sorting recycling at the kerbside, but by pre-sorting you will be helping them to work quickly and efficiently, as well as safely.

Isn't this just a way of making residents do the work instead of the crews?

We need residents to pre-sort their recycling so that we can complete the rounds as quickly as possible and have collection vehicles on the road for less time. This will keep our roads clear, have a more positive impact on our environment and assist in reducing the cost of providing the service.

Why can't the crews sort it like they used to?

The items in BOX1 will be emptied in one compartment of the new vehicles. Items in BOX2 will be sorted by the crews into separate compartments. It saves more time if you can group the items together, but please do not use carrier bags as this will slow the crews down.

Why aren't you recycling spectacles and mobile phones anymore?

Our research shows that the amount of spectacles and mobile phones we have collected in the past was minimal. We have therefore chosen to use their compartment to expand the cardboard and paper capacity, since this is a material people produce more of.
