I am married to a locally born retired fireman John Sellis who is a Tavistock Town Councillor. John is a Devon lad born and bred. John has two sons from his first marriage (widowed) and four grandchildren.
I have two children (30 and 28 years) one working in Local Government and one studying for a PhD at Edinburgh University.
I was born in the Isle of Man, enjoyed a Comprehensive School education, played the piano and violin, played loads of sport, achieved ten O levels and was generally unremarkable.
I qualified as a State Registered Nurse in 1980 and spent most of my working career in critical care, renal dialysis, burns, high velocity injuries, self harm, neo natal and paediatrics plus I nursed in cardiac care. I have also worked in palliative care, residential and nursing homes and in the community.
I like walking, nature, music and art, am a qualified though non practicing masseuse and aroma therapist. I love rugby and used to be the medic for a local rugby team.
I have a very low boredom threshold and like being a Councillor because it is great when you can help residents. I also love to switch off and enjoy a good laugh with friends.
My parents were teachers and my grandparents came from farming, fishing, legal and marine engineering backgrounds.
I was brought up to be kind, honest and self reliant.
I detest unkindness, rudeness, waste and big headedness. I take my role as a Councillor seriously, but have to laugh at myself too!
I meditate to help my spirit and take care to look after myself. Being an effective Councillor takes time and energy.
I am currently the Chairman of the WDBC Audit Committee and a member of the Overview & Scrutiny Committee.
I go to the Tavistock Townscape Heritage Partnership meetings, Cornish & West Devon Mining Heritage, the Tamar Valley AONB and try to get to Horrabridge Parish Council Meetings and also Whitchurch & Plasterdown Grouped PC.
